For the first time in UniMelb history, ASA, ESSA, SAMM and UNIT have joined forces to present an exclusive event for first year Bachelor of Commerce students, “Major Decisions” – a unique event which gives you personal insights from relatable peers, to help you make informed decisions about your BCom majors (we know, it’s a mouthful).
“What are you going to major in?” – one of the most-asked questions this time of year for a first year BCom student. It’s an important decision; one might even say… a Major Decision. It’s too often the case that first years aren’t fully informed when choosing their majors, and at some point, may regret a decision that they can no longer change.
Sure, you have the official university information – study plan outlines, subject handbook guides, broad descriptions of majors on the UniMelb website, and so forth. But what is studying x major ACTUALLY like?
To answer this, we have created a unique event which is completely informal, casual, and student-to-student. This is older, experienced students sharing personal journeys and pearls of wisdom with younger students – insights and advice you can’t find on any official website. We want to share with you what we wish we knew in first year.
When: Tuesday 19 September, 12-2pm
Where: FBE Theatre 4, Room 221, Level 2
Tickets: Free (registration mandatory at https://goo.gl/forms/
The event will consist of keynote speeches from committee members, with one representative per major in the following order:
ASA – Accounting
ESSA – Economics
UNIT – Finance
SAMM – Marketing & Management
For those interested in actuarial studies, check out ASS (Actuarial Students’ Society) at http://
After a moderated Q&A, there will be light refreshments in the FBE level 2 foyer, where each society will have a stall with a few representatives. Feel free to approach anyone and ask questions about their experiences in the major and in BCom, or to learn more about the society and recruitment opportunities.
If you’re a first year making your major decision (or an older student considering changing majors), this event is a must. We hope to see you there!
